Okay, I’ll openly admit I scoffed a hundred scoffs at this glue stick intended for a baby’s head that everyone’s talking about, but I’ll also openly admit I ended up buying some anyway…even though my youngest “baby” is five now.
See, during maternity leave after my second child was born, I brought my sweet new little one into the office for a visit. Amid the coos and questions from my coworkers, one person who will remain nameless (because you know who you are, JOE) said, “Hey wait, I thought you were having a girl!”
Um, yes. It was a girl.
I get it. I understand that people can be confused about a baby’s gender if you don’t make it super obvious for them.
Sometimes, when you dress your infant daughter in her brother’s hand-me-down blue track suit, and she doesn’t have much hair, and she’s not quite old enough for lipstick and eye shadow yet, someone will see her and assume she’s a boy just because she isn’t wearing a tulle ballet skirt and high heels (there’s a link for you in case you don’t think baby high heels are a real thing that you probably need immediately).
But when my coworker thought my beautiful baby girl was a boy, I just laughed and said, “Yeah, she’s one of those new-fangled kinds of boys with ovaries, but she’s wearing them inside her body which, admittedly, does make them harder to see.” Obviously his mistake didn’t bother me much, but it really bugs some moms, and so they feel a need to address the problem.
Or maybe they just really like the look of a fully accessorized baby. Either way.
The solution many parents have found comes in the form of Girlie Glue.
Girlie Glue, whose tagline is, “It’s never to early to be Girlie!” is a glue stick that allows you to adhere bows and sparkly widgets directly to your infant’s noggin.
This is a real breakthrough for moms who want to bedazzle their babies, especially when the baby doesn’t have enough newborn hair to make a clip work, or if the mom doesn’t like the uncomfortable head-tourniquet look of those lacy infant headbands.
Girlie Glue has been around a while, but this week Ruptly published a video that features Brazilian mamas raving about about it, which generated some new buzz.
The moms in the video seem to love adding bows to their babies to make the gender unmistakable.
According to Buzzfeed‘s translation, one mother reports, “In a daily stress, there is no time to take good care of the baby and put on nice pink clothes. I can only do the ponytail and put a bow on her hand, but she ends up looking like a boy. This is perfect and it also does not hurt when I paste the glue.”
Some viewers thought the glue was a pretty terrible idea.
Or that it was unnecessary, at best.
But the product certainly has plenty of supporters, as well.
