26 Gorgeous, Sexy And Funky Looks From New York’s Runways

1. Prabal Gurung

Gurung — whose much celebrated (no, literally) Target line comes out Sunday — showed a military-inflected runway collection with a lot of lovely pieces in olive green. He offered a number of gorgeous red carpet options that will please his fan and friend, stylist Rachel Zoe. My favorites were not the long gowns with cut outs at the rib cages that probably put a more than one person at the show on an immediate juice fast, but the shorter dresses, which were interesting to look at while still being quite pretty.

Can’t you see Mary Crawley in this? Yes, yes you can.

4. Altuzarra

Altuzarra is a master of weird sexiness. My favorite looks were the pared down, body-con ones, especially his leather pieces with the slits and sheer inlays. He might be one of the only people who can convince fashion-hungry women the thing they need for fall 2013 is a leather turtleneck.

I definitely see these boots getting knocked off by Jeffrey Campbell or some other brand like that.

7. Jason Wu

Known best for dressing Michelle Obama for not one, but TWO inaugural balls, not to mention other public appearances in between, Wu’s invitations came with leather lace-up detail, suggesting the audience would all be in for a severely sexy dominatrix-inspired surprise. But the pieces critics were most willing to submit to was his feminine stuff, especially his pants-including evening options.

We’ve been seeing a lot of pants for evening on the runways in recent seasons (thank Christian Dior). Let’s see if MObama or some actress will be bold enough to try it.

Also, lovely eye makeup in this show, no?

10. Rebecca Minkoff

We look at shows like Minkoff’s for adorable ideas about what real people can actually wear — something the highest of high fashion designers seem seldom concerned with. Minkoff delivered great printed dresses, a funky pant or two, and of course great shoes and bags many people know her best for.

This is also a cute take on a leather dress — loose! — so you can still wear it after you eat lunch. It’s also a nod toward the looser silhouette we’re seeing with leather lately (leather sweatpants are the new leather leggings).

His long women’s coats were just lovely.

Also, great lipstick!

15. Rachel Comey

Every hipster’s favorite label, surely, so if you’re a fan of Girls start studying up on Rachel Comey. Her collection was cool, but not so cool that you felt embarrassed by it. And if you’re just not the type to go for this leather tee-shirt, for example, she offered plenty of other more… breathable things.

18. Band of Outsiders

Subtract the wacky hats from this show and you have plenty of cute and funky options. This dress is one of the few that draws attention right to a woman’s boobs without being vulgar. Also, I am so appreciative of anyone showing flat shoes and making it look cool.

A lot of you are probably thinking this dress is just too weird but! Can’t you see it without the gloves and the silly hat on someone like Nicole Richie, looking amazing?

20. VPL

Here’s another show that falls on the less pretentious side of the fashion week spectrum. I loved these jaunty pants and, overall, the colors in this collection. Everyone is showing red, white, and black together this season — along with grays and neutrals — but this show avoided being drab.

Here’s a way to wear neutral if it normally washes you out and makes you look like your dying — trim it with black and add a splash of cheerful red.

22. Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony

Sevigny’s OC collections are always quirky in this very specific, somewhat ironic way. But a lot of the pieces are not only just plain fun (because we’re STILL not over ironic dressing yet, please) but also downright adorable.

You might not want the do rag or the clogs but this dress and pencil skirt/tee combo are totally wearable and comfy-looking. And if there’s one thing I certainly desire from my wardrobe after seeing dozens of women parading around post-blizzard New York in leather leggings and stilettos with their feet exposed, it’s comfort.

That blue suit is so cute. If Kate Middleton lived in Brooklyn this is what she’d wear.

25. Creatures of Comfort

Also on the more wearable and funky side of fashion week is Creatures of Comfort. I love the barely-open back on this top, and the plaid pants.

And we’re seeing a lot of turtlenecks on the runways, but if the leather kind won’t work for you, this is maybe the perfect turtleneck sweater. It’s a nice update to a traditional cable knit.
